The Grove Scenic Reserve

Just a few mins drive west from Beau Vista Pohara is a much-loved easy walk that winds intimately through captivating rock formations and stunning nikau and native trees. If you're looking for a memorable experience this one is a must and well worth a visit or two.

The sign states it takes 30 mins to walk the loop track. This is becuase the rocks, nikau and native fauna are so breathtaking that it really would be rude to pass at pace.

Walk length:  1km loop track. Time 30mins return.

Difficulty: Easy

Track condition: Mostly a wide gravel path. Obstacles include: a few optional steps to the lookout, small water channels in the path, a tighter section where the path narrows and the ground is uneven. The last two obstacles make this unsuitable for wheelchairs, otherwise it is an enjoyable short walk for most.

Look for: Explore the rock features and crevaces. Take the steps to the lookout where you can see through the rocks over farmland and scross the Motupipi estuary. Look up and see old tall nikau trees, vines, ferns and more. If you go at night with a low-light torch aimed at the ground you may see some glow worms amongst the rocks (but don't shine your torch directly on them).

Directions: From Pohara follow Abel Tasman Drive west towards Takaka for just 1km and turn left onto Clifton Road signposted to The Grove Scenic Reserve. Turn right onto Rocklands Road and you'll quickly see the sign for The Grove entrance. Park by the sign and walk from there.

Parking:  Good parking and picnic area right by the entrance. There is also a DOC toilet near the carpark.
